Build It Yourself: Make Angel Eyes LED Light Rings
LED lights not only seem to be cool, they are also green, power saving, and last much longer than most bulbs for sale. Be able to make angel eye rings for your motor car headlights choosing LED light bulbs.
Difficulty: Moderate. You'll use a soldering gun, drill and Ryobi tools or other power tools for this task. Seek help if this is the first time you're handling these accessories.
Materials/Equipment: LED light bulbs (2x 3.6 v, 20mA), resistor (270 ohms), small blind rod (steel replacement rod), 24-gauge stranded line, soldering iron and solder, Makita tools with cut-off wheel attachment, drill and also drill bit #150, pliers for trimming wires, reflective tape, visible tape/painter's tape, aluminum foil, heat shrink tubing, jar cover (the same diameter as the ring), scissors, 12 V adjusted power supply, oven.
Mold the Ring
To start with, measure the diameter of your headlights. We'll be needing a 4-inch diameter ring for this instruction. After measuring, get a little blind rod. One mini rod creates two rings. For a 4" diameter headlight, the rod requires to be 12.5" long (use this equation: Length = 3.14 x diameter). Add on about 2 extra inches to have handles. Cut the rod using Hitachi tool with a cut-off steering wheel attachment.
To enhance ring brightness, we have to make very small cuts along the smooth (back) side of the circle. These kinds of cuts will refract lighting toward the forefront for greater perceptibility. Use the Dremel tool to make cuts 1.5 mm apart from others. Continue doing cuts until you get the other side of the cycle.
Drill the Hole
We're now ready to connect the LED light bulbs. Drill a pool on each end of the rod to accommodate a LED light bulb inside. Use drill bit #150, and set up to 6000 RPM. To hinder the rod from melting, pull out the bit as you go to let it cool. Repeat the procedure until you make a LED light bulb-sized pit. The LED light bulb needs to tightly fit.
Remove the LED light bulb to make the hole a little more see-through by putting a bit of clear nail polish inside the the hole. This allows more illumination to go through. Allow the polish to dry before re-inserting the LED bulb. Check out the bulb with a 12 V adjusted power supply.
To catch the LED light and make it visible even in daytime, use aluminum foil and reflective tape. Wrap the foil throughout the uncut part of the ring and cover with heat shrinkable tubing. Heat the tubing in position. Trace the ring on reflective tape and afterwards cut out. Strip and then glue the tape on the flip side of the ring.
Wire the LED lights
Work with a resistor (270 ohms). Bind the two LED light bulbs in a series connection by joining the negative leg of one LED bulb into the positive leg of the other LED bulb. Peel one end of a 24-gauge cable and wrap it around the negative leg of the first LED bulb. Attach into place using soldering gun. Peel off the other end of the same wire and wrap it all around the positive terminal of the second LED. Solder down into place.
Slice a second wire and cover it all-around the negative terminal of the second one LED, and solder jointly. Bring the end of the second line back to the other section of the ring. Tape the two wires together on the flip side of the ring with painter's blue tape. Take off the LED bulb terminal legs. So you have a single positive then single negative terminal on one side of the angel eyes ring. Test it out with a power supply.
